Back issue for magazine - Project Baltia 0211 Courtyard

Project Baltia 0211 Courtyard Everyone today is talking about public space; and this, of course, is precisely a sign that such space is in short supply. The urban courtyard – and it is this which is the subject of this issue of Project Baltia – is a particular instance of a public space that borders on the private. The best example of such a mixed state is the cour d’honneur, a type of courtyard (involving a stretch of street that seems to have been sucked inside a house) that was popular at the turn of the 19th century. This was a very hospitable kind of courtyard. The residents of the house regarded it as their own territory, but it was also possible for passers-by to glance inside and sit for a while on a bench.
