We’re off to the seaside in this issue of Blueprint. For the cover story, Tim Abrahams took a road trip along the south cost of Britain: from Eastbourne, home to Rick Mather’s Towner art gallery, to Deal which now has a new café on its pier designed by Niall McLaughlin and finally on to Folkestone where Alison Brooks has designed the Quarterhouse performing arts centre. These projects show that coastal towns are using diverse means to resurrect their ailing fortunes, yet it is the optimistic, rational architecture of Mather, partnered with the astute curatorial approach of the Towner, which seems most rooted in its locality. |
